9/15/2014 - NPD FACEBOOK POST 9.15.14 - Curbside Parking Issues

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all had a great weekend – Its Monday and we are all back at it for another round!! I want to first say congrats to our Naugy High Football team after they came out of Friday night’s game with a victory (47-30 Vs Torrington). Officers working the game were treated to an uneventful night….however, they were very disappointed in that no one brought them donuts…no donuts…can’t believe there were no donuts… .

In other news, there was apparently a “donut free” car show that also took place this weekend on Sunday, downtown on Old Firehouse Road. From the feedback we have received the event went well with a lot of beautiful cars on display…but again, there were no donuts…

Moving along here, I’d like to address my Monday “Topic of the day” depicted in the attached photo. At first glance its apparent there are a few things going on here with this automobile... Now, lets put aside the usual guessing game and explain what we see from the Police Officer perspective. First off, this vehicle has what we call in the business, a flat tire – granted it is only flat on the bottom, but flat none-the-less. Secondly, the vehicle is unable to start, I know it is hard to tell this from the photo – but the open hood is a clue to a possible engine problem (no – they do not teach us this stuff at the police academy, I’ve gained most this knowledge through my observations from a donut shop window!).

Now, were not really sure which “chicken or the egg” issue came first - but it is very clear that this car wasn’t going anywhere…which leads us to our next problem; the car is parked on a sidewalk, on a public road where parking on a side walk , on a public road is illegal. The exceptions to curbside parking are that the vehicle is legally parked ON a public road but OFF of a sidewalk. Next, a vehicle properly parked curbside, must be moved every 24-hours (which obviously, this car was not) and of course, the vehicle must be registered.

The owner of the car pictured in the photograph was located and ultimately was able to move the vehicle before it was ticketed and towed, however the issue still remains in that curbside parking in many Borough neighborhoods is limited at best. The Naugatuck Police Department struggles with finding vehicles which are in violation of this law… except of course in winter, when violating cars start to resemble snow drifts!

The Naugatuck PD would like help in identifying vehicles that violate the curbside parking laws - this is a quality of life issue for many residents and the best way to alleviate parking problems is to ensure immobile and unregistered vehicles are off the street. If you are having an issue with one of these vehicles in your neighborhood, let us know by calling the PD at 203-729-5221 (Please do not list them on this Facebook post as this site is not monitored by a dispatcher 24 hrs a day like our phones are!) and we will be glad to have one of our “patrol specialists” (Aka: A Cop) come out and take look.

Okay – thank you for your time…It’s been great chatting with you on this fine Monday , Please have a great day and be safe!
