***SCAMS***
The Naugatuck PD reminds citizens to please remember that there are
many scams out there … we regularly receive reports of citizens
receiving calls from some of these – This is not an all inclusive list –
but just SOME of the scams we have seen here in Naugatuck:
IRS
Scam - Very aggressive & pushy callers threatening to arrest you if
you don’t pay an amount of money they claim you owe … They will ask you
to pay Via money wire or even through Pay Pal … Contact the IRS
1-800-366-4484.
The Microsoft Computer Scam - Victims are called
and told that there is a problem with their computer and for a nominal
fee the suspect can fix it. The suspects often claim to be working with
Microsoft and tell you that your computer has been infected with a virus
and offer an update or fix. They talked you through logon steps in
order for the fraudster to gain remote access to the computer …. Victims
will see the mouse moving and changes being made to the display… They
then make you pay a fee before telling you that the problem has been
resolved….Once the initial payment has been processed it is not uncommon
for additional larger payments to be debited from the victim’s account
without their permission.
Prize Scams … Who doesn’t want to win
money – right??? … Well, this is how they try to lure you – they call or
send you a letter claiming you are a winner, lotteries, sweepstakes, or
even government agencies that notify you that you have “lost” money
waiting for you … they will usually then tell you that they will send
you a check for “X-$ Amount ) and in return request you send a check
(…that will bounce) back to them for a certain amount and keep the rest …
or they ask you to wire money and do the same thing …. ALL of them end
with you paying out and receiving NOTHING!! …
The NPD Reminds
you to NEVER give anyone your personal information and NEVER give a
credit card or checking account info out … and NEVER cash a check in
return for paying out or WIRE money out - UNLESS you are 100% positive
what your paying for is 100% legitimate … And if you need help in
