Good Wednesday morning everyone,
It’s looking great out today …. However get ready to turn up the heat! Its looking like the weather will be getting hotter and hotter as we move towards the weekend – Please prepare and look out for your elderly / sick neighbors and pets to make sure they all stay cool and hydrated….
The NPD reminds citizens to lock homes and garages / sheds … particularly when you go away … here are a couple tips / reminders from the NPD about keeping your home safe while you are away:
- Ask friends / neighbors for some help and have them keep an eye onyour home while you’re gone … I find a dozen donuts really helps with persuading them … on that note … I find a dozen donuts helps just about everything!!!
- Avoid posting on social media that you are away if at all possible …. Maybe add that your extremely large dogs are not vacationing with you … and that they tend to be cranky while your gone…..Its best to post about your vacation once you return … and don’t blab about your plans to leave beforehand…. Oh … and don’t leave those “I’m Away” messages on your voice mail either … a “Come take my stuff” message is much more direct!!
- Purchase a light timer for your home … these work for radios as well ….. they are much more effective than just leaving lights on all the time … nothing says “I’m Away” like lights either being on or off all the time … mix it up!!!
- Place a stop on your mail … or have that friend you bribed with donuts pick up the mail everyday … stacked mail means you have either gone on vacation … or your deceased … both of which tip off burglar’s that your home is ripe for the picking!!
- Remove the spare key … yes … burglars know about the spare key … the plastic stone is not really fooling anyone … nor is the hidden key under the front mat ….or the one in the mail box … or the one over the door frame …. Or the one in the flower pot …. Remove them and give it to that donut eating neighbor to use when they pick up the mail …
- Finally – notify us … The Naugatuck PD will place your home on a “door check” list and the residence will be checked periodically by officers…Provide us with the dates you will be away and any key holders we can contact incase of an emergency …. No need to leave us donuts either …(just for the record …. I’m not saying you can’t…)
